Francine is listening to Vaginal Discharge (she's been on a scum folk kick lately) in her room when her phone rings. She looks to see who it is.
It's Jake.
She debates about whether or not to let the call roll over into voicemail, but finally sighs and picks up the phone at the last second.
"Hello."
"Hi, Francine, it's me, Jake, it's about 3 p.m. on Sunday and I was just calling . . ."
"Jake, I'm here. It's me. You aren't leaving a message."
The line goes silent, then "Francine?"
"Yes, Jake, I'm here."
"Oh, sorry, I thought I was leaving a message."
"I managed to reach the phone before the voicemail picked up."
"Oh, well, that's good. So how are you?"
"I'm fine. How are you?"
"I'm good. I went to a conspiracy theory thing yesterday."
"You? You went to a conspiracy theory thing?"
"Yeah, what's surprising about that?"
"You were stalking me, weren't you?"
"Uh, no, one of the people at the community college told me about this conference, so I went to check it out."
"Hoping to see me."
"Well, no, but I wouldn't have been surprised if I did. I think you would have liked it."
"Did you like it?"
"Uh, I left about halfway through. I wanted to make sure I would catch Grapple Groove."
"But did you like it?"
"Uh, well, it was interesting. I kind of came away with the sense that a lot of the people there were comforted by the notion that somebody was in control, even if that somebody was fairly creepy. Whereas, I don't think there's anybody in control. Life's too big and random to manage."
"Jake, that's just what they want you to think."

It seems a large contingent of the populace has a thing or two to say about
