Blog Love Omega Glee: Human Factories (28 January 2012)

The alarm clock spouts loud rock and roll music. A hand surfaces from underneath a plethora of blankets piled on a mattress on the floor, and slaps at the alarm until finally the snooze button engages and the music stops.

Nine minutes later the music returns. Francine's head emerges from the blankets. She groans, puts her hand on her head, then rolls over, and shuts off the alarm clock. She mumbles to herself, "Why did I agree to work a doubleshift today?"

She lies in bed, yawns, and thinks, "I need the money, that's why."

"Why do I need the money?"

"Because I have bills."

"Why do I have bills?"

"Because I have to live, and that's how society is organized with money as a medium of exchange."

"Why do I have to live?"

"It's fun."

"Getting up early to work is not fun so what's the point?"

"Work produces wealth so I can keep on living."

"But why?"

"So I can keep producing and living."

"What am I producing?"

"Wealth. Maybe more human beings. Oh, and piss and shit for the ecosystem."

"I'm a piss and shit factory?"

"Over a lifetime, the average human being leaves behind a river of piss and a mountain of shit."

"A river of piss and a mountain of shit, that's what a human life amounts to, really?"

"OK, maybe just a small pond of piss and a small hill of shit, but still that's impressive. It fertilizes the soil and returns some nutrients to the Earth."

"But that's it?"

"Also, the crows, worms, and bacteria would enjoy munching on my corpse. Ultimately, this makes for more fertilizer, which makes for more plants, which feed more animals, and so on."

"So I should get out of bed just so the crows can have a snack later rather than sooner? That's my motivation?"

"Well, that and I have to piss."
