It's that later part of the dinner shift where Francine shifts to autopilot. She hoofs it over to her new table and without much of a glance at the customers, starts in on her server spiel, while flipping open her order book, "Good evening, welcome to Yaws. My name is Francine and I will be your server. We thank you for dining with us tonight. Our specials tonight are roasted emu with rosemary potatoes . . ."
"Francine?"
"Yes," Francine finally actually looks at the customers, and discovers it's Lilith from Purgatory and another woman who looks familiar, "Hi! What are you guys doing here?"
"Oh, it's our anniversary so we decided to splurge. You've met Eve before, haven't you?" Lilith says, gesturing to her dining companion, another woman in her thirties.
"Yes, you run the bookstore down the street from Purgatory. I was just in there the other day," Francine says, shaking hands with Eve, "But we've never been formally introduced."
"Pleased to meet you," Eve says, "I must say you look very nice all dressed up. I'm used to seeing you in jeans and a t-shirt."
"Oh, we all have to wear this standard white buttondown and black slacks," Francine says, "This way the customers know whom to look for if they need assistance. I'm surprised the owner didn't just try to brand 'Yaws' on all our foreheads, but they went for uniform dress instead."
"Well, we need assistance celebrating so why don't you pick a good wine for us and send over the whole bottle?" Eve says, putting aside the winelist.
"Francine's got good taste," Lilith adds, "We can trust her to get us boozed up without going bankrupt."
"That's important with the way books have been selling lately," Eve says, unwrapping her napkin, "Though your friend almost keeps me in business singlehandedly."
"Masani? Yep, she likes to read."
"Is that the African-American woman with the cool glasses, who sometimes comes in the cafe with you?"
"Yep, that's her."
"She's very sweet. Pardon me for asking, but are you two dating?" Lilith says.
"No, we're just housemates. I think she's in love with our other housemate though, but he doesn't ever seem to leave the house anymore so you've probably never met him."
"Is that Donald Coyote?" Eve says.
"Yes! You know him? I'm surprised."
"Well, I always call him when I get a new batch of comic books in. He's always excited to look through them," Eve says, "He doesn't come in any other time though. He's very nice. And very polite."
Michael, the restaurant manager, snaps his fingers as he walks past Francine, and whispers, "Franny, you have other customers."
"Oh, I'm sorry, I'd better get moving. I'll bring a nice bottle of wine out as soon as I can," Francine says, tucking her order book into her back pocket, "And, I'll be back for the rest of your order then."
"That roasted emu sounds interesting," Lilith says, "Can I get it flabbergasted?"
